The latest report from the Child Poverty |Action group gives the figures for raising a child to age 18, based on what the public thinks is a minimum standard of living. The overall cost (including rent and childcare) is £150,753 for a couple and £183,335 for a lone parent. Many parents are seen to struggle to attain this even when working.
Recently the Family and Child care Trust estimated summer holiday childcare could cost up to £170 per week in some UK regions. A World Economic forum working paper from 2016 also showed that having children had a negative impact on the economics of parents. You can also compare with Australia by looking at this 2018 study from the Australian Institute of Family Studies.
