Helpful new paper from the House of Commons Library: Briefing Paper 8265 by Philip Brien and Matthew Keep, published in March 2018
It covers income and spending from 1689-2016 and includes statistical charts on total government income and spending as a percentage of GDP for the last 300 years. There are also sections on taxation and other ways of raising government revenue, and public debt and largest areas of public expenditure.
