Today (8th March) is budget day- keep up with the news and views – with our selection of academic resources.
This will be the last spring budget as unless the chancellor changes his mind all will be held annually in the autumn from now on.

The House of Commons Library also has a good background briefing. They also have some historic facts and figures giving a list of chancellors and lengths of speeches from 1968 onwards.
According to the House of Commons Library the longest continuous speech was by William Gladstone on 18 April 1853. It lasted 4 hours 45 minutes. The online version is over 33,000 words long.
The shortest speech was in 1867 by Benjamin Disraeli’s and lasted only 45 minutes. The Spectator referred to it as ‘bare and meagre’ with regard to finances.
