A landmark report on the State of Child Health released by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health found that the UK rated poorly in a comparison health of children in European Nations. 25 indicators were compared including infant mortality, obesity, immunisation and breastfeeding and in most cases poor health was linked with social deprivation and inequality.
Also released this week, research by the Social Mobility Commission showed social class mattered in terms of access to professional jobs and salaries. They estimated working class people earnt an average of 17% less each year than colleagues from more affluent backgrounds. This follows an All Parliamentary Group report on the Class Ceiling
The Sutton Trust website also has many examples of research conducted into social class and access to education and the professions.
In a speech this week its chief executive discussed Britain’s social mobility problem.
