Shocking news this week that the Ministry of Justice has recorded high levels of suicide in prison and an internal enquiry will be launched. The Howard League has said that 2016 was the worst year ever. This follows a recent inquest report which found failings lead to the death of Dean Saunders in HMP Chelmsford.
Recent trends can be traced in the Quarterly Safety in Custody data from the Ministry of Justice which records incidents of self-harm and injury .

For information on the wider extent of suicide see the official data from the ONS which records total numbers of deaths for England and Wales. Data is also maintained by the Samaritans in their 2016 suicide report. and the Mental Health Foundation which links to national and international data sources.
The OECD makes available some international suicide data from its Health at a Glance series.
And the WHO has data on causes of death which enable cross-national comparisons.
