According to the latest report from London First, foreign students in London add a total of £2.3 billion to the economy. However many find current immigration rules onerous.
This echoes a Universities UK 2014 analysis which also highlighted the positive economic impact.
A number of organisations have emphasised that the benefits of foreign students are cultural as well as economic. Universities’ Scotland report: Richer for it refers to the immediate enrichment of student life as well as a longer term diversity in local communities. British Council has also focused on the value of increasing links with different cultures. In 2014, it released a survey on attitudes towards international students which revealed that UK students view their presence as a positive influence.
UK government policy documents relating to international students include a 2013 report on the wider benefits of international higher education.
