According to the Institute for Economics and Peace, United Kingdom Peace Index http://www.visionofhumanity.org/unitedkingdompeaceindex/2013/ the UK is 11% per cent more peaceful than it was a decade ago.
The UKPI measures levels of peace according to five key indicators: the levels of violent crime, homicide, public disorder, weapons crime and the number of police. The main website also has measures of international peacefulness and terrorism which allow some cross-national comparison.
For UK official data:
- see the latest crime statistics from the Home office via the ONS website
- see the annual crime survey data for information on the experiences of individuals
At a local level:
- find out about crime in your area (England and Wales) and compare it with national averages on the police website
- there is also the Metropolitan Police mapping site
Eurostat has some up to date figures on crime rates across the EU as a whole for total crime levels and different crimes.
