To celebrate (!) the forthcoming elections here are some favourite historic digital collections.
- Museum of the Moving Image: the Living Room Candidate Has online commercials from 1952 and includes examples from 2016. In terms of the latter the blog provides a great daily commentary on events. Search the site by candidate and issue. See some interesting examples on corruption. For teachers there are lesson plans and guides.
- U.S. Presidential Elections 1992-2012: Historical Photo Collection Good archived collection from PBS Wisconsin Public Broadcasting Media Lab each section has text on the context of the campaign and suggestions and plans for teachers,
- Campaign Buttons View over 1000 examples of images of election campaign badges produced from 1896 onwards. Although the site operates commercial sales it can be browsed and the images viewed in all their glory! Choose the product comparison feature to view examples together to compare style.
- Library of Congress web guides to elections 1789-1920 Very detailed resource guides including primary source materials from the collections, plus bibliographies of key works and links to related websites.
- Vote: The Machinery of Democracy This website from the National Museum of American History Explores the Voting Process. It includes images and text on the history of voting this includes some materials on womens suffrage as well as fascinating images of weird and wonderful voting machines Features and materials on the controversy surrounding the Butterfly Ballot from 2000 Florida Election
