Australian government launch new web archive
The Australian Government Web Archive is a new site launched by the National Library of Australia. It complements the Library’s long established PANDORA Archive. The AGWA is a collection of Commonwealth Government websites dating from June 2011. Selected older government web content will continue to be found on the PANDORA Archive. These date back to approximately 1996. Search by keyword to retrieve archived snapshots of Australian government department and agency websites. Individual documents in pdf format are archived and also retrievable.
The UK government has a similar web archive which preserves web material. There is a useful section of themed collections where you can browse materials on specific topics such as the budget 2013, the Olympic games and the financial crises. The archive is useful for trying to locate material which may have disappeared or been removed from ‘live’ UK government websites.
Another possibility for tracing material which has been lost like this is the Wayback machine which has archived copies of many registered web sites from 1996 onwards.
