Based on a book written by Stephanie Hankey, Tom Longley, Marek Tuszynski and Maya Indira Ganesh, this site offers advice for activists/ journalists on using common data visualization tools in their work. Look at the tools section for practical advice on combining and integrating data, displaying case studies over time and presenting and modifying images. The site also contains case studies.
Also helpful for journalists is the Data Journalism Handbook http://datajournalismhandbook.org/1.0/en/ published under the auspices of the European Journalism Centre which can be downloaded from their website free of charge. It contains further advice on getting data, working with it and presenting, case studies are also included.
