Nielsen social media report 2012 , subtitled social media comes of age, focuses mainly on the USA & has good graphics showing total time spent and the most popular site.
Also released today ofcom report 2012 International Communications Market Report states that the UK is a nation of internet shoppers and users of online TV. International comparisons are made with other nations.The report also covers usage of phones, postal services, radio, Internet and television. It gives data on ownership, use and types of use based on large scale surveys.
However despite increasing use of the Internet there are concerns that young people (and perhaps some older ones) do not know how to use it properly. A recent article by Carl Miller & Jamie Bartlett of Demos discusses this: Digital fluency’: Towards Young People’s Critical Use of the Internet. In it the authors argue that there is a need for more information literacy teaching in schools.to encourage critical evaluation of internet sources. The article was published in journal of information literacy Vol 6, No 2 (2012).
