Martin Quinn, Director of Distance Learning and Lecturer in Regional Development at the School, underlines why he is looking forward to his trip to Hong Kong.
In the early mid 1990s the Universities of Leicester and Hong Kong were at the forefront of the development of Distance Learning in Hong Kong with the launch of the MSc in Training. Since then, the two institutions have expanded their collaboration and Leicester is now proud to boast an alumni population of more than 3,500 MBA, MSc HRM & Training, MSc Marketing, BSc in HRM and Doctorate in Social Sciences (in 2005 this was the first of its kind) graduates. The School of Management is a truly international management School drawing students and staff from all over the globe to our campus and distance learning programmes. In order to facilitate the delivery of our distance learning programmes around the world, we work with partners in key locations to provide the support our students need. In Hong Kong we work with the School of Professional Adult Continuing Education (SPACE) at the University of Hong Kong: a partnership which has been in place for more than 20 years.
Students in Hong Kong, then, have the advantage of studying with two world class Universities. The course materials the School provides are supplemented by workshops run by SPACE staff and also by two visits each academic year by Leicester faculty. Our programmes have been designed to combine with a range of Advanced Diploma’s offered by SPACE and the course materials incorporate a great deal of management and training research done during the partnership period. SPACE and Leicester have also worked together on research projects in the Hong Kong labour market: highlights include studies of the development of the Human Resource profession in Hong Kong, of the careers of women managers in Hong Kong, and more recently, on the physical development of Hong Kong.
In May 2014, during the next Open Day, I will deliver a keynote talk entitled “Management is too important not to debate – moving beyond the textbooks”. Prospective students will be invited to sessions on the MBA (with Dr Will Green), MSc Marketing (with Dr Jo Grady) and the DSocSci/MSc and BSc in HRM (again with me). We will also be holding a conference for our Doctoral students as a means of showcasing their research into work, employee development and management issues in Hong Kong.
Our work in Hong Kong has been hugely rewarding for the staff in the School and, we hope, for our students as well. We look forward to the next twenty years of fruitful collaboration with SPACE and to meeting the next generation of Hong Kong management students and practitioners.
