Join the National Space Centre for a LIVE Space Q&A with Professor Hugh Lewis on Friday 5 March 19:00-20:00, discussing space debris and space sustainability.
Professor Hugh Lewis is the Head of the Astronautics Research Group at the University of Southampton. The Q&A is part of the Southampton Science and Engineering Festival #SOTSEF. Hugh’s current areas of research are space debris and space sustainability, which aims to ensure that future generations of space explorers and users can achieve their goals and ambitions, in spite of the space junk that we are currently leaving in orbit around the Earth.
To help make such a future a reality, Hugh is developing computational models to understand how the population of space debris will grow in the future; not just over the next decade or century, but over the next ten thousand years.
Curiously, Hugh is currently finding out that we first need to understand how the space debris population changes as a result of very fast events occurring in just a few microseconds – collisions between objects in orbit. Hugh thinks if we can understand space debris over these two extreme timescales, our children’s great-grandchildren will be able to make use of outer space in the way they want to, without limits.
