What’s it like to live on the International Space Station? How do you become an astronaut? What’s your favourite thing about space? You can ask an astronaut your space questions this Friday at 19:00 as the National Space Centre is joined for a very special Live Space Q&A by Italian ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.
In 2009, after nearly a year of tests, 6 new European Space Agency (ESA) astronauts were selected from an initial 8,413 applicants. One of the astronauts selected, alongside Brit Tim Peake, was Italian fighter pilot Samantha Cristoforetti. In March 2012 she was assigned to fly as flight engineer on the Soyuz TMA-15M, as part of the crew of Expedition 42/43 on the International Space Station.
On 23 November 2014 Samantha launched from Kazakhstan, returning to Earth on 11 June 2015 after spending 200 days in space. The mission, which was given the name Futura, was the second long-duration flight opportunity for the Italian Space Agency, the eighth for an ESA astronaut.
Cristororetti was the first Italian woman in space and on board the ISS and she also holds the record for longest uninterrupted spaceflight by a female European astronaut. During her time on board the ISS, Samantha became an internet sensation, tweeting pictures of earth, becoming the first person to drink an espresso in space and even giving cookery lessons while in microgravity.
Born in Milan, Italy, in 1977, she studied at the Technische Universität Munich, Germany, the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace in Toulouse, France, and the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technologies in Moscow, Russia. She holds a master’s degree in engineering, as well as a master’s degree in aeronautical sciences from the University of Naples Federico II in Italy. Lt. Cristoforetti is a fighter pilot with the Italian Air Force. In her leisure time, she enjoys mountaineering, scuba diving and caving.
