The last twelve months have been an incredibly busy period for the School of Physics and Astronomy, and we have been collecting all our stories and achievements together into an online news blog. Just before Christmas, the Leicester Physics News Team (LPNT) collated this into our first ever Yearbook. When we pull everything together in this way, the breadth and diversity of our activities in a single calendar year is incredible, as you can see for yourself!

As we look forward to the dawn of a new decade, we can reflect on the continued growth and success of the School of Physics and Astronomy. Our Department has evolved to become a School. Our five existing research groups are exploring ways to break down any barriers between them, and to restructure the way our School works. The exciting dreams of Space Park Leicester are becoming a reality, with incredible new opportunities on the horizon.
Our foyer has been thoroughly updated and modernised, to create a welcoming new shared space that represents our ambitions as a School. Our website has been dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century (SiteCore) to showcase the rich portfolio of research, teaching, and public engagement activities that we are involved in. Our undergraduates remain happy and enthusiastic in their home at Leicester, and the transformation of the curriculum from Years 1 to 4 is now complete. Our Admissions team have risen admirably to the challenges posed by demographics and the marketisation of Higher Education. And we bid farewell to one Head of School (Graham Wynn), and welcome the new (Emma Bunce).
With all these changes, we feel the School is ready to take on the challenges of the 2020s.
Our thanks to everyone who has contributed their stories this past year, and to Harneet Sangha and the news team for their amazing efforts. And congratulations to everyone who has been featured in the 2019 edition. Please do remember to submit your ideas and stories for publication on the news blog, so that we can continue to celebrate the School’s successes in 2020!
