The University is working to develop a more inclusive curriculum, to make our teaching more inclusive and more responsive to our diverse student body.
It is doing this through the University of Leicester Institute for Inclusivity in Higher Education (ULIIHE) and through department and school initiatives like MedRACE.
ULIIHE’s Racial Inclusivity Toolkit is full of examples of what a more inclusive module or curriculum might look like. As the Toolkit says, the Library can help academics with resources. The Inclusive Collections Group (ICG) guides the help the Library offers.
We look for resources, free or paid for, that have the potential to support more inclusive teaching. We publicise these to library colleagues so they can pass details to academic colleagues.
The Library Champions have helped us devise the Diversifying your reading list toolkit, which prompts academics to consider if their reading list could be made more diverse and include works by different voices, or material from different sources. Our Toolkit is linked from the Racial Inclusivity Toolkit and from the Education Hub.
The ICG is making links to similar initiatives in other libraries and archives.
We have started to discuss the issue of language used in records in Library Search. There may be inappropriate, offensive or harmful language in item titles or descriptions. It may be there because at the time, that was the language that was common. Item titles cannot be changed, but we are talking about whether we can change the language used in descriptions, and about how we warn library patrons that they may encounter that language.
