Tom Moore, Research Services Consultant for open research recently attended the annual Figshare Fest at Manchester Museum. Our Leicester Research Archive (LRA) is powered by Figshare, and is the institutional all-in-one repository for research data, publications, theses, and much more. Meeting up with colleagues from universities and research institutions is really valuable, a great way to learn about others experiences of using Figshare and also plans for the future roadmap developments.
Tom’s reflections from the event can be found below. There are some links and signposting to interesting presentations and resources from the day.
Figshare Fest 2023 was held at the Manchester Museum, co-hosted by the University of Manchester. Figshare is the platform that hosts the Leicester Research Archive (LRA) and Figshare Fest 2023 was a day for the Figshare community across the UK and Europe to come together with presentations, interactive discussions and networking opportunities.
There were presentations by Figshare and Symplectic, which among other things, demonstrated the change within Digital Science structure and a synergy and shared aims between the two products.
For me the standout presentations were the researcher use cases. Helen Newall of Edge Hill University and James Bird, a PhD Candidate from the University of Manchester.
Helen, as an artist-researcher, spoke about using Figshare as a way to show varied non-traditional research outputs as an integral part of her REF submission. Watch Helens presentation here.
James spoke about open research in practice – “open Research Data Management allowed him to structure his PhD to showcase his preparation, the experimental process and analysis points as he completed his studies. As a result, he was able to showcase a well-rounded project by utilizing Figshare’s integrations with Github and eLabFTW.” Watch James presentation here.
Over lunch and breaks (and a beer at the end of the day) I was able to have some good conversations with other institutions, Figshare and Symplectic about resolving issues within our own setup, future developments and football! (Mark Hahnel, CEO of Figshare, supports Everton who were in a relegation scrap with Leicester at the time – the rest is history!)
