{"id":1488,"date":"2013-10-14T14:31:03","date_gmt":"2013-10-14T14:31:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/telsocsci\/?p=1488"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:16:23","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T13:16:23","slug":"study-of-undergraduate-students-and-information-technology-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/telsocsci\/report\/study-of-undergraduate-students-and-information-technology-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.educause.edu\/library\/resources\/ecar-study-undergraduate-students-and-information-technology-2013\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1489\" alt=\"Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2013\" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/telsocsci\/files\/2013\/10\/Students-and-Information-Technology-2013-231x300.png\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/telsocsci\/files\/2013\/10\/Students-and-Information-Technology-2013-231x300.png 231w, https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/telsocsci\/files\/2013\/10\/Students-and-Information-Technology-2013.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/a>The Educause Centre for Applied Research (ECAR) has recently published their \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.educause.edu\/library\/resources\/ecar-study-undergraduate-students-and-information-technology-2013\" target=\"_blank\">ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2013<\/a>\u201d report.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key findings of the report:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students recognize the value of technology but still need guidance when it comes to better using it for academics.<\/li>\n<li>Students prefer blended learning environments while beginning to experiment with MOOCs.<\/li>\n<li>Students are ready to use their mobile devices more for academics, and they look to institutions and instructors for opportunities and encouragement to do so.<\/li>\n<li>Students value their privacy, and using technology to connect with them has its limits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ECAR recommendations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students expect their instructors &#8211; not others &#8211; to train them to effectively use the technology required for coursework (e.g., use of the CMS, hardware, and software- including specialty software and common productivity software). Instructors need support, encouragement, and possibly incentives to do so.<\/li>\n<li>Educate your students about MOOCs; most students are unaware of them. Institutions have a fleeting opportunity to contextualize MOOCs for students in a way that will mesh with the institution\u2019s own MOOC strategy.<\/li>\n<li>Create (or update) a strategy for incorporating mobile device use into the classroom. Address the IT infrastructure barriers (such as a lack of convenient charging outlets and\/or charging stations and insufficient network access) that keep students from using their devices effectively while on campus.<\/li>\n<li>Approach learner analytics purposefully and thoughtfully by adhering to information privacy principles.
