{"id":3675,"date":"2018-08-17T08:38:11","date_gmt":"2018-08-17T08:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/?p=3675"},"modified":"2024-11-26T17:49:07","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T17:49:07","slug":"international-youth-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/2018\/08\/17\/international-youth-day\/","title":{"rendered":"International Youth Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>12th August was designated International Youth Day by the UN General Assembly in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>To commemorate it here\u00a0are several resources.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>End of childhood<\/strong><br \/>\nThe <span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Save the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethechildren.org\/content\/dam\/usa\/reports\/emergency-response\/end-of-childhood-report.PDF\">Children report, Stolen Childhoods.\u00a0The report has found that in 2017<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000\">1.2 billion childhoods were threatened by conflict, poverty and\u00a0gender discrimination.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Political participation\/Engagement<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/youth\/publications\/sg-reports.html\">UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs resources on Youth\u00a0<\/a>produce a biennial <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unworldyouthreport.org\/\">World Youth report<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 It focuses mainly on young people&#8217;s participation in economic, political and community life.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Employment\/Poor pay <\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/publications\/books\/global-employment-trends\/WCMS_598669\/lang--en\/index.htm\">ILO publishes an annual report on youth employment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">It is also part of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/topics\/youth-employment\/databases-platforms\/global-initiative-decent-jobs\/lang--en\/index.htm\">The Global Initiative on Decent Jobs for Youth <\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">is the first-ever, comprehensive United Nations system-wide effort for the promotion of youth employment worldwide.\u00a0 Y<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">ou can also explore their website to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/employment\/areas\/youth-employment\/WCMS_193036\/lang--en\/index.htm\">find key resolutions and documents<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"> relating to low pay and employment problems of young people.<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Health risks<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/topics\/adolescent_health\/en\/\">WHO has information on adolescent health risk and teenage pregnancy<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Access to education<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> UNESCO publishes the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/gem-report\/youth\"> GEM Global Education Monitoring reports\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"> which monitor progress towards the education targets in the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework.<br \/>\nThe <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ungei.org\/resources\/index_index.html\">United Nations Girls Education Initiative<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0has reports on problems girls face in accessing education worldwide.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>12th August was designated International Youth Day by the UN General Assembly in 1999.
