{"id":3473,"date":"2018-03-13T16:40:54","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T16:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/?p=3473"},"modified":"2025-10-28T15:08:25","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T15:08:25","slug":"economics-of-the-oscars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/2018\/03\/13\/economics-of-the-oscars\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics of the Oscars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the winners <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscars.org\/oscars\/ceremonies\/2018\">of the Academy awards<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> 2018 have been announced, here are some social science sites for locating materials on the economics of the Oscars.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/business\/news\/oscars-2016-academy-awards-box-office-money-worth-a6897246.html\">The Independent<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> has an interesting section of facts on impacts on careers which was published in 2016.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/1407\/academy-awards\/\">Statista has a fact file<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> of data on the awards, which subscribers can download.<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to the authors of t<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">he 2001 academic paper simply titled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1465-7295.2001.tb00046.x\/pdf\">What\u2019s an Oscar worth<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">?\u201d winning the Oscar for Best Picture on average boosted box-office sales by $18.1 million.<br \/>\n<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/254688\/box-office-revenues-academy-awards-winners-vs-box-office-hits\/\">Box office mojo<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> compares income of box office hits with winners 2010-2016.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The highest grosser of 2016 was &#8220;Rogue One: A Star Wars Story&#8221;, which generated box office revenue of over 532 million U.S. dollars.
