{"id":3117,"date":"2017-06-02T12:08:54","date_gmt":"2017-06-02T12:08:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/?p=3117"},"modified":"2024-11-26T17:49:30","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T17:49:30","slug":"is-your-news-fake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/2017\/06\/02\/is-your-news-fake\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Your News Fake?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Concerns about fake news are increasingly dominating the headlines and <a href=\"https:\/\/sheg.stanford.edu\/upload\/V3LessonPlans\/Executive%20Summary%2011.21.16.pdf\">studies have shown that students often have difficulty evaluating the truth of resources<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/hoaxy.iuni.iu.edu\/\">Hoaxy<\/a> from the University of Indiana visualises the spread of fake news stories online.<\/p>\n<p>Recently the\u00a0New York-based institute Data &amp; Society published a report <a href=\"https:\/\/datasociety.net\/output\/media-manipulation-and-disinfo-online\/\">Media Manipulation and Disinformation Online<\/a> which examines the phenomenon.\u00a0 It states that over reliance by news outlets on social media \u2018novelty over newsworthiness\u2019 makes them vulnerable to extremist viewpoints.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shorensteincenter.org\/combating-fake-news-agenda-for-research\/\">The Shorenstein Center has recently published an agenda for\u00a0 action<\/a>\u00a0based on the outcome of a conference held in February.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/fakenews.publicdatalab.org\/\">field Guide to Fake News,<\/a> a project of First Draft, is exploring the use of digital methods to trace the production, circulation and reception of fake news online.\u00a0 Sample chapters can be downloaded free online.\u00a0 These cover such topics as how Facebook propagates fake news and how to trace the circulation of fake news online.<\/p>\n<p>Guides for journalists and members of the public include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stopfake.org\/en\/how-to-verify-youtube-videos\/\">Amnesty International stop fake \u2013 how to verify Youtube videos<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other useful fact checking\u00a0 sites include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/fullfact.org\/\">Full fact for the UK<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/\">Factcheck.org (USA)<\/a> which is \u00a0a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/truth-o-meter\/\">Politifact truth o meter from USA<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Concerns about fake news are increasingly dominating the headlines and studies have shown that students often have difficulty evaluating the truth of resources.
