Find information <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/autismday\/\">on the United Nations website<\/a> this includes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/autismday\/links.shtml\">official resolution\u00a0\u00a0a<\/a>nd details of this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/autismday\/index.shtml\">year\u2019s observation<\/a> when legal capacity of persons with autism will be discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Why it is important?\u00a0 Because According to the National Autistic Society around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autism.org.uk\/about\/what-is\/myths-facts-stats.aspx\">Around 700,000 people may be autistic.<\/a>\u00a0 Aside from the social and emotional costs a recent report by LSE staff <a href=\"http:\/\/eprints.lse.ac.uk\/3462\/1\/Economic_consequences_of_autism.pdf\">found high economic costs.<\/a>\u00a0 The aggregate national costs of supporting children with ASD were estimated to be \u00a32.7 billion each year.\u00a0\u00a0 For adults, the aggregate costs amount to \u00a325 billion each year.<\/p>\n<p>The National Autistic society released figures that in 2016 only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autism.org.uk\/get-involved\/media-centre\/news\/2016-10-27-employment-gap.aspx\">16% of autistic adults were in full time work<\/a>.\u00a0 Yet <a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10803-015-2518-2\">research has shown the values of creative thinking<\/a> that can be shown by autistic adults.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-employing-autistic-people-makes-good-business-sense-39948\">conversation blog<\/a> has also highlighted research showing the value to business of autistic employees.<\/p>\n<p>For information on recent research consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autistica.org.uk\/research\/\">Autistica website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For information on recently published books and academic articles try the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autism.org.uk\/autismdata\">current awareness services of the NAS Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2nd April is World Autism Awareness Day.
