{"id":2961,"date":"2017-02-17T13:14:10","date_gmt":"2017-02-17T13:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/?p=2961"},"modified":"2024-11-26T17:49:33","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T17:49:33","slug":"what-does-the-church-of-england-think-of-same-sex-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/2017\/02\/17\/what-does-the-church-of-england-think-of-same-sex-marriage\/","title":{"rendered":"What does the Church of England think of same sex marriage?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofengland.org\/media-centre\/news\/2017\/01\/general-synod-press-conference.aspx\">Controversy,<\/a> The <a href=\"http:\/\/cofecomms.tumblr.com\/post\/157187352537\/the-house-of-bishops-report-we-need-each-other\">House of Bishops Report: We need each other<\/a>, has arisen over a recent paper to the synod which\u00a0was presented as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofengland.org\/about-us\/structure\/general-synod\/agendas-and-papers\/february-2017-group-of-sessions.aspx\">general paper to the synod<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofengland.org\/media\/3863472\/gs-2055-marriage-and-same-sex-relationships-after-the-shared-conversations-report-from-the-house-of-bishops.pdf\">GS 2055<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Marriage and Same Sex Relationships after the Shared Conversations: A Report from the House of Bishops [item 14].<\/p>\n<p>However a number of clergy objected to its emphasis on heterosexual marriage and <a href=\"https:\/\/retiredbishopsletter.com\/\">an open letter was penned by a number of retired bishops<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thinkinganglicans.org.uk\/\">thinking Anglicans website<\/a> released a survey from British Social Survey that 50% of Anglicans \u2018thought there was nothing wrong with same sex\u2019 marriage. Their website also links to other papers and news stories which generally oppose the stance of the report. They include materials from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onebodyonefaith.org.uk\/news\/church-of-england-synod-gs2055-case-studies\/\">One body one faith<\/a> including the case studies to be discussed and alternative interpretations of them.<\/p>\n<p>See also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stonewall.org.uk\/our-work\/blog\/lgbt-people-faith-need-respect-and-acceptance\">Stonewall response from LGBT community.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-38989304\">report was rejected on 15<sup>th<\/sup> February<\/a>.
