Shocking news this week that the Ministry of Justice has recorded high levels of suicide in prison and an internal enquiry will be launched.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The Howard League has said that 2016 was the worst year ever.<\/span><\/span><\/a> This follows a recent inquest report which found failings lead to the death of <\/span><\/span>Dean Saunders in HMP Chelmsford.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Recent trends can be traced in the <\/span><\/span>Quarterly Safety in Custody data from the Ministry of Justice<\/span><\/span><\/a> which records incidents of self-harm and injury . <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Howard League for Penal Reform has published <\/span><\/span>studies on the financial impact of suicide<\/span><\/span><\/a> and <\/span><\/span>recommendations for reform<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

For information on the wider extent of suicide <\/span><\/span>see the official data from the ONS<\/span><\/span><\/a> which records total numbers of deaths for England and Wales. Data is also maintained by <\/span><\/span>the Samaritans in their 2016 suicide report.<\/span><\/span><\/a> and the <\/span><\/span>Mental Health Foundation<\/span><\/span><\/a> which links to national and international data sources.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The OECD makes available <\/span><\/span>some international suicide data from its Health at a Glance series.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

And the <\/span><\/span>WHO has data on causes of death which enable cross-national comparisons.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n
