The Independent newspaper will be ceasing printed publication.<\/span><\/p>\n

A <\/span>useful article on the conversation blog<\/span><\/a> by a journalist involved in its early years sets the demise in context. <\/span><\/p>\n

Other useful resources for finding information on newspaper circulation which enable the tracing of recent trends include:<\/span><\/p>\n

Materials from the <\/span>Pew Research Center<\/span><\/a> which trace the declining value of American newspapers over the last two decades.\u00a0 They also publish a really useful annual report with data called the State of the New Media. The <\/span>2015 edition<\/span><\/a> recorded that in 2014 newspaper circulation (USA) fell 3% .\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

For many large titles usage is shifting online.\u00a0 The <\/span>New York Times reported an average weekday print<\/span><\/a> \u2018circulation of less than 650,000 in September 2014.\u00a0 But their website and associated apps attracted nearly 54 million unique visitors in January 2015, and the majority of their paid circulation comes from digital sources (about 1.4 million)\u2019 The <\/span>New York Times Innovation report showed<\/span><\/a> how an established newspaper was struggling to adapt to the digital world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>In the UK the Guardian recorded that from 2014-2015 the top 10 UK daily newspapers had recorded an average\u00a0 fall in circulation of 10%. They continue to record stories relating to the changing nature of <\/span>news audience on their website<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Other sources analysing and researching the changing nature of news gathering and reporting include the <\/span>Nieman Lab<\/span><\/a> which has predictions of the future of journalism in 2016 from journalists.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

A new initiative to encourage engagement is the <\/span>Christian Scientist read about Redirect<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 which is pushing \u2018positive news stories\u2019 on social media.\u00a0 At present these are aiming to present a more positive view point to counter viewpoints of Islam as extremist. \u00a0See some <\/span>examples on the website<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The <\/span>BBC has also launched Dropbox<\/span><\/a> a mobile friendly site directed at young African audiences.\u00a0 The pilot arose from a Nairobi based company it is pulling personalised news stories from The Juicer and CANDY.<\/span><\/p>\n
