{"id":2403,"date":"2016-02-05T11:24:13","date_gmt":"2016-02-05T11:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/?p=2403"},"modified":"2024-11-26T17:50:00","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T17:50:00","slug":"racism-in-british-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/2016\/02\/05\/racism-in-british-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"Racism in British Universities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The\u00a0 UCU union has <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucu.org.uk\/media\/7861\/The-experiences-of-black-and-minority-ethnic-staff-in-further-and-higher-education-Feb-16\/pdf\/ucu_bmesurvey_report_feb16.pdf\"><b><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">just released a survey<\/span><\/b><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"> of its BME members in which shockingly 90% of those who answered reported that they had faced barriers to promotion and over 70% reported sometimes or often being subject to bullying or harassment by their managers. <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Runnymede trust has just published a collection of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.runnymedetrust.org\/uploads\/Aiming%20Higher.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">essays on race and diversity in the UK academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"> which elaborates on the issues. It covers participation of BME students in higher education the experiences of BME academic staff. <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The topic was also discussed at a UCL lecture \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mBqgLK9dTk4\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">why isnt my professor black ?in 2014<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"> and has also led to the launch of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nus.org.uk\/en\/news\/why-is-my-curriculum-white\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">why is my curriculum white campaign<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">In 2011 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nus.org.uk\/en\/news\/racism-widespread-across-uk-education-system-report-shows\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">the NUS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"> also recorded widespread racism against BME students.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">For access to more recent stories see <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.racecard.org.uk\/category\/education\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Race card<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0 UCU union has just released a survey of its BME members in which shockingly 90% of those who answered reported that they had faced barriers to promotion and over 70% reported sometimes or often being subject to bullying or harassment by their managers.
