{"id":2123,"date":"2015-08-21T15:46:51","date_gmt":"2015-08-21T15:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/?p=2123"},"modified":"2024-11-26T17:50:05","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T17:50:05","slug":"digital-technology-and-older-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/2015\/08\/21\/digital-technology-and-older-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Technology and Older people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent government report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/440191\/gs-15-6-technology-and-support-networks.pdf\">What are the likely changes in society and technology which will impact upon the ability of older adults to maintain social (extra-familial) networks of support now, in 2025 and in 2040?<\/a> part of the Government Office for Science\u2019s Foresight project on the Future of an Ageing has found that many older people are ambivalent towards ICT and technology.\u00a0 It is currently estimated that\u00a0an estimate of 4.8 million people aged over 64 who have never used the Internet.\u00a0\u00a0The report considers the implications of this for society and individuals.\u00a0 Areas considered include the impact of the internet on older peoples wellbeing , finance and\u00a0health care and\u00a0barriers to usage.<\/p>\n<p>Useful to compare this with a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2015\/07\/28\/15-of-americans-dont-use-the-internet-who-are-they\/\">Pew Internet report 15% of Americans don\u2019t use the Internet \u2013 who are they?<\/a> This also found that 39% were aged 65 or over.
