{"id":2015,"date":"2015-05-15T13:57:21","date_gmt":"2015-05-15T13:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/?p=2015"},"modified":"2024-11-26T17:50:08","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T17:50:08","slug":"uk-election-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/2015\/05\/15\/uk-election-polls\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Election Polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Why were the general election polls wrong?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now the election votes have been counted, commentators are asking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2015\/may\/08\/polls-wrong-pre-election-results\">why many of the polls were wrong.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some refer to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2015\/may\/12\/polls-shy-tories-left-conservatives\">\u2018shy Tory\u2019<\/a> who does not want to publicly admit to voting Conservative. This concept emerged in 1992 when the proportion of the vote won by the Conservative Party was significantly higher than indicated by polls.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.icmunlimited.com\/white-papers\/messages-from-sprial-of-silence.pdf\">Nick Sparrow and John Turner referred to a \u2018spiral of silence\u2019<\/a> which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2010\/apr\/08\/general-election-2010-polls\">major pollsters have since tried<\/a> to correct.<\/li>\n<li>However <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncpolitics.uk\/2015\/05\/polls-wrong-initial-postmortem.html\/\">Number Cruncher<\/a> argues that this is a continuing factor.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishpollingcouncil.org\/general-election-7-may-2015\/\">British Polling Council<\/a> has announced a review.
