{"id":1619,"date":"2014-05-16T15:33:20","date_gmt":"2014-05-16T15:33:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/?p=1619"},"modified":"2024-11-26T17:50:31","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T17:50:31","slug":"the-public-voice-of-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/socscilibrarians\/2014\/05\/16\/the-public-voice-of-women\/","title":{"rendered":"The Public Voice of Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/v36\/n06\/mary-beard\/the-public-voice-of-women\">The Public Voice of Women<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read the transcript or listen to the podcast of\u00a0 the London Review of Books lecture by academic Mary Beard delivered in March 2014.\u00a0 It considers the suppression of\u00a0women\u2019s voices\u00a0in western cultural history.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For a consideration of women\u2019s voices in journalism and the media look at the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/petitions\/major-news-organisations-bbc-itn-and-sky-ensure-30-percent-of-experts-used-on-tv-radio-are-women\">\u00a0Expert Women<\/a>\u00a0campaign from Broadcast.\u00a0 The online petition has over 3,000 signatures.\u00a0 Unfortunately many of the articles on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.broadcastnow.co.uk\/home\/expert-women\/\">Broadcast website<\/a>\u00a0which summarise recent research on women in the media are password protected.<\/li>\n<li>In terms of the UK &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wftv.org.uk\/\">\u00a0Women in Film &amp; TV<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0is the leading membership organisation for women working in creative media .\u00a0 Its website is\u00a0a good starting point for finding news, support networks and summaries of research.<\/li>\n<li>In the USA the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.womensmediacenter.com\/pages\/the-problem\">\u00a0Women\u2019s Media Center<\/a>,\u00a0founded in 2005 as a non-profit progressive women\u2019s media organization by Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem, aims to make women visible and powerful in the media.
