{"id":747,"date":"2021-02-01T17:15:16","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T17:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/?p=747"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:37:29","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T13:37:29","slug":"january-2021-digest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2021\/02\/01\/january-2021-digest\/","title":{"rendered":"January 2021 Digest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>With 2020 now behind us, the Physics Community team would like to say a virtual \u201cwelcome to 2021,\u201d and to share some of the stories on our School blog from the past few weeks.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We very much hope that you enjoyed reading the <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2020\/12\/18\/announcing-the-2020-yearbook\/\">2020 yearbook<\/a>, and that you have continued to engage with one another via the student <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2020\/11\/20\/why-not-join-the-conversation-on-discord\/\">Discord<\/a>, and have taken advantage of all the <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/category\/seminar\/\">research seminars<\/a> on offer.\u00a0 In particular, the National Space Centre\u2019s popular Live Q&amp;A series has featured a host of special guests this month, including astronauts <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2021\/01\/20\/meet-spacex-demo-2-astronauts-bob-and-doug-national-space-centre-qa\/\">Bob &amp; Doug<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2021\/01\/29\/meet-airbus-mars-rover-engineer-abbie-hutty-national-space-centre-live-qa\/\">space engineers<\/a> working on Mars rovers \u2013 an excellent way to spend a Friday evening in lockdown, with more exciting guests to come.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Space News:\u00a0 <\/strong>Last month we were updated on the X-ray optics for the Chinese-French satellite <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2020\/12\/18\/svom-has-left-the-building\/\">SVOM<\/a>, which has left Leicester to be ready for launch in 2022.\u00a0 Leicester planetary scientists were delighted by the news that the <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2021\/01\/15\/nasas-juno-mission-extended\/\">Juno mission<\/a>, which has been exploring Jupiter since 2016, has been extended for another four years.\u00a0 And we look ahead to the highly-anticipated launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2021\/01\/29\/leicester-awaits-the-launch-of-webb\/\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> this October, and Leicester\u2019s involvement in MIRI.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our Community:<\/strong>\u00a0 Congratulations are in order for PhD student <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2021\/02\/01\/leicester-graduate-launches-space-career-with-nasa\/\">Daniel Watters<\/a> on receiving a prestigious fellowship to work at NASA\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center; take a look at some of the photos of the great <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2021\/01\/14\/photographs-of-the-great-jupiter-saturn-conjunction\/\">Jupiter-Saturn conjunction<\/a> from last December;
