With 2020 now behind us, the Physics Community team would like to say a virtual \u201cwelcome to 2021,\u201d and to share some of the stories on our School blog from the past few weeks.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong>

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We very much hope that you enjoyed reading the 2020 yearbook<\/a>, and that you have continued to engage with one another via the student Discord<\/a>, and have taken advantage of all the research seminars<\/a> on offer.\u00a0 In particular, the National Space Centre\u2019s popular Live Q&A series has featured a host of special guests this month, including astronauts Bob & Doug<\/a>, and space engineers<\/a> working on Mars rovers \u2013 an excellent way to spend a Friday evening in lockdown, with more exciting guests to come.

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Space News:\u00a0 <\/strong>Last month we were updated on the X-ray optics for the Chinese-French satellite SVOM<\/a>, which has left Leicester to be ready for launch in 2022.\u00a0 Leicester planetary scientists were delighted by the news that the Juno mission<\/a>, which has been exploring Jupiter since 2016, has been extended for another four years.\u00a0 And we look ahead to the highly-anticipated launch of the James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> this October, and Leicester\u2019s involvement in MIRI.

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Community:<\/strong>\u00a0 Congratulations are in order for PhD student Daniel Watters<\/a> on receiving a prestigious fellowship to work at NASA\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center; take a look at some of the photos of the great Jupiter-Saturn conjunction<\/a> from last December; and we continue our \u201cConversations with\u2026\u201d<\/a> series with a profile of our Head of School, Professor Emma Bunce<\/a>.

Opportunities:\u00a0 <\/strong>Don\u2019t forget to consider entering the 3-minute thesis<\/a> competition if you are a graduate student or postdoc.\u00a0 And please spread the word about ESA\u2019s latest engagement opportunity, the chance to have children\u2019s artwork<\/a> on the rocket that\u2019ll send ESA\u2019s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) to Jupiter in 2022.
