{"id":733,"date":"2021-02-01T14:13:14","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T14:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/?p=733"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:37:29","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T13:37:29","slug":"leicester-graduate-launches-space-career-with-nasa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2021\/02\/01\/leicester-graduate-launches-space-career-with-nasa\/","title":{"rendered":"Leicester graduate launches space career with NASA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><strong>Congratulations to Leicester PhD student Daniel Watters, a PhD student from Leicester\u2019s Earth Observation Science Group, has been awarded a NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellowship at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, US<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel has studied at the University of Leicester since 2013. He first received an MPhys Physics with Astrophysics degree in July 2017, and will be submitting his PhD thesis later this month. As a NASA Postdoctoral Fellow, Daniel will continue his research into satellite observations of global precipitation that he began during his time at Leicester.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2021\/02\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-737\" width=\"380\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2021\/02\/image.png 479w, https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2021\/02\/image-300x241.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br>Daniel\u2019s research will include evaluating the accuracy of NASA\u2019s global precipitation estimates, retrieved from the satellite constellation which contribute to the NASA-JAXA Global Precipitation Measurement mission. This research will contribute to improving understanding of global precipitation, which is important since precipitation can be both beneficial (by providing freshwater) and detrimental (by causing flooding or droughts in extreme cases) to Earth.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The experience will help launch him into his space career, after winning a prestigious NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellowship at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, USA, to continue his research into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/wea.3865\">space borne precipitation observations<\/a>.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor sure, it\u2019s like a dream. I always liked Maths and Physics, so when I was deciding which course I wanted to do, I looked for something where I could apply the skills I had learned for other applications.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d always had an interest in space, but I knew that Leicester was great for space science when I started looking for universities. It was brilliant to see that my home town university was so interested in space science and had active researchers working on international missions.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I first saw the email that I\u2019d been accepted by NASA, it was a feeling of disbelief. Just unbelievable. I can\u2019t wait to start.\u201d<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his undergraduate and Masters studies, Daniel was a member of the Space Crew at the National Space Centre and also completed placements in the University\u2019s Earth Observation Science Group, which also hosts the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO).<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There, he started research into satellite observations of precipitation across the globe, focusing on comparing data from NASA and the Japanese Space Agency\u2019s ongoing Global Precipitation Measurement mission with readings at ground level. He continued:<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy area of research in particular looks at how satellites perform in their measurements of precipitation, and what\u2019s called the diurnal cycle \u2013 or daily variation \u2013 of rainfall and how that varies across the globe.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUltimately, it\u2019s these climate models which are simulating how future climate change will occur and which will inform Governments\u2019 policies.<br><br><br>\u201cHistorically these models have struggled to capture the daily variations of precipitation, and part of my work has been to use this satellite data to provide excellent coverage across the globe.\u201d<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fellowship lasts up to three years and will take Daniel to NASA\u2019s largest single facility in the USA, where scientists and engineers are also working on the Space Launch System which will take humans back to the Moon.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it won\u2019t be the first time he has had a brush with an astronaut. Daniel added:<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cActually, on my undergraduate course there was an astronaut called Jeff Hoffman who came in to teach a module on human spaceflight, so I got to attend his lectures and at the end of the module we had feedback from him.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo even be in the same room as someone like that was unbelievable.\u201d<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel\u2019s PhD project is supported by supervisor Dr Alessandro Battaglia, the Earth Observation Science Group, NCEO, and part-funded by the Central England NERC Training Alliance (CENTA).<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Emma Bunce is Head of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester and President of the Royal Astronomical Society. She said:<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll of us in Physics and Astronomy are delighted for Daniel to be accepted on to this prestigious Fellowship. His hard work and dedication to his research area in the Earth Observation group have been evident during his PhD, and the opportunity to continue this with NASA is fantastic reward.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDaniel has studied with us at the University for his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and will join many successful Physics and Astronomy alumni working in the space sciences around the globe.
