What&#8217;s your favourite thing about space?\u00a0You can ask an astronaut your space questions this Friday\u00a0at 19:00\u00a0as\u00a0the National Space Centre\u00a0is joined\u00a0for a very special\u00a0Live Space Q&amp;A\u00a0by Italian ESA\u00a0astronaut\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.esa.int%2FScience_Exploration%2FHuman_and_Robotic_Exploration%2FAstronauts%2FSamantha_Cristoforetti&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cleigh.fletcher%40leicester.ac.uk%7C2d043a79f81947b8e88f08d8907a554e%7Caebecd6a31d44b0195ce8274afe853d9%7C0%7C0%7C637418202391488663%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=Ub%2B1HUWYHq7RFTO1op7pxhKrF1%2FJKkhfHLqQE%2B77%2Bys%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\">Samantha <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration\/Astronauts\/Samantha_Cristoforetti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cristoforetti<\/a>.\u00a0<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2020\/11\/image-7-1015x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-509\" width=\"404\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2020\/11\/image-7-1015x1024.png 1015w, https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2020\/11\/image-7-297x300.png 297w, https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2020\/11\/image-7-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2020\/11\/image-7-768x775.png 768w, https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2020\/11\/image-7.png 1018w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br>In 2009, after nearly a year of tests, 6 new European\u00a0Space\u00a0Agency (ESA)\u00a0astronauts were\u00a0selected\u00a0from\u00a0an\u00a0initial 8,413 applicants.\u00a0One of the\u00a0astronauts selected, alongside\u00a0Brit\u00a0Tim Peake,\u00a0was Italian fighter pilot Samantha Cristoforetti.\u00a0In March 2012 she was assigned to fly as flight engineer on the Soyuz TMA-15M, as part of the crew of Expedition 42\/43 on the International Space Station.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On\u00a023 November 2014 Samantha launched from Kazakhstan,\u00a0returning\u00a0to Earth on 11 June 2015 after spending 200 days in space.\u00a0The mission, which was given the name\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/outpost42.esa.int\/logbook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Futura<\/a>, was the second long-duration flight opportunity for the Italian Space Agency, the eighth for an ESA astronaut.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cristororetti\u00a0was the first Italian woman in space and on board the ISS and she also holds the record for longest uninterrupted spaceflight by a female European astronaut.\u00a0During her time on board the ISS, Samantha became an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/science-environment-33090745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">internet sensation<\/a>, tweeting pictures of earth, becoming the first person to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/ISS_Science_Blog\/2015\/05\/01\/space-station-espresso-cups-strong-coffee-yields-stronger-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drink an espresso in space<\/a>\u00a0and even giving cookery lessons while in microgravity.\u00a0<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in Milan, Italy, in 1977, she studied at the\u00a0Technische\u00a0Universit\u00e4t Munich, Germany, the Ecole\u00a0Nationale\u00a0Sup\u00e9rieure de\u00a0l\u2019A\u00e9ronautique\u00a0et de\u00a0l\u2019Espace\u00a0in Toulouse, France, and the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technologies in Moscow, Russia. She holds a master\u2019s degree in engineering, as well as a master\u2019s degree in aeronautical sciences from the University of Naples Federico II in Italy. Lt. Cristoforetti is a fighter pilot with the Italian Air Force.
