{"id":485,"date":"2020-11-20T15:57:25","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T15:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/?p=485"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:37:29","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T13:37:29","slug":"why-not-join-the-conversation-on-discord","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2020\/11\/20\/why-not-join-the-conversation-on-discord\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Not&#8230; Join the Conversation on Discord?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Undergraduate students in the School of Physics and Astronomy run the \u201cTo Infinity and Beyond\u201d Discord server, open to all to maintain a strong community during the months of lockdown.<\/em><\/strong><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many of us, learning how to communicate and maintain friendships in a virtual world is a relatively new experience, with many hours of formal lectures and meetings via Zoom and MS Teams.\u00a0 What\u2019s missing is a place to unwind and relax after a long day, to share a coffee or a meal with friends, to play games and watch TV.\u00a0 The buzz of the coffee room in the School, the hum of the foyer and corridors between lectures, and the noise of the cafes over lunch \u2013 we\u2019re all missing these normal experiences.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The virtual world can never fully replace them, but it can help.\u00a0 Postgraduates and Undergraduates from across the School have been using <a href=\"https:\/\/discord.com\/\">Discord<\/a> as a way to keep in touch, via live chat and video.\u00a0 From chill-out rooms to study groups, from movie-nights to space news, from shared gaming to simple swapping of memes and gifs, the possibilities are endless.\u00a0 Discord \u2013 which has grown over the past five years since it started our as a social gaming platform &#8211; is freely available via the web, or as an app, and we want to make sure that all are welcome and can join in!<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Physics undergrads Francis Watts, Peter Dines and Rhys Newland have been managing the <strong><em>\u201cTo Infinity and Beyond\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Discord server over the past few months, and want to stress that it\u2019s open to all. \u00a0 This started last year when the undergrads met at one of our &#8216;Firm-Offer Holder&#8217; weekends, and has grown into a thriving online community.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2020\/11\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-486\" width=\"206\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2020\/11\/image-4.png 399w, https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2020\/11\/image-4-260x300.png 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Get Involved<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An email invitation will shortly be sent our across our School, and when you log in you\u2019ll see a #welcome section that will serve as a starting point.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This #welcome section is where people can read the <a href=\"https:\/\/discord.com\/channels\/564683236068950036\/779341413645156372\/779341510893895681\">#rules<\/a> of the Discord server. \u00a0You can click on <a href=\"https:\/\/discord.com\/channels\/564683236068950036\/690903502943289394\/690903906624077836\">#role-select<\/a> and use reactions to identify your role (e.g., year group, among other things) so that you can access specific \u2018rooms\u2019 \u2013 for example, first-years would be able to access first-year channels, but not hop over to third-year channels.\u00a0 These year-group-specific channels (text and video) are ideal if you\u2019re more comfortable in smaller groups.\u00a0 From there, feel free to wander into any of the corners of the server, and get inspired to gather with your friends.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our student societies, #PhySoc and #AstRoSoc have their own sections automatically linking to their Twitter feeds, and there\u2019s even a #physics-and-astro-blog channel to keep up with the news from this blog.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why not give it a try?&nbsp; Set a time to meet, and join the Discord server (via the email \u2013 if you don\u2019t receive it, contact&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:phys.community@le.ac.uk\">phys.community@le.ac.uk<\/a>). &nbsp;&nbsp;No one wants to feel isolated right now, so please watch out for one another, and encourage others to get involved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Undergraduate students in the School of Physics and Astronomy run the \u201cTo Infinity and Beyond\u201d Discord server, open to all to maintain a strong community during the months of lockdown.
