Todays ‘Conversations With…’ article focuses on Dipali Thanki, a Laboratory Supervisor in the School of Physics and Astronomy. Dipali won a Technician’s award in the 2019 Discovering Excellence awards, and is heavily involved in Undergraduate labs.

What is your official Job Role<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am a Laboratory Supervisor for the School of Physics and Astronomy.

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you briefly describe your role within the School of Physics and Astronomy?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I make sure that all physics undergraduate labs run smoothly. I also manage both of the Oadby Observatories. I fix damaged equipment during labs and maintain the current equipment. When at the observatory I am responsible for its maintenance and operation. I provide training sessions for new students and staff to use the telescopes.

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What made you want to start on this career path?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I always had a passion for Science, especially Physics.

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you could give your former self one piece of advice what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don’t have any regrets and would not change a thing about my life.

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your favourite thing to do outside of work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Binge watching Netflix and cooking. I also have an interest in DIY. My next project will be making a garden swing.

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you have any interesting hobbies or collections?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cooking and fitness. I did a lot of the cooking for the Diwali celebration in the Physics department last year which I really enjoyed. The response was very overwhelming, it was so beautiful to see everyone joining in to celebrate the Indian Festival of Light.

What is your proudest achievement (doesn’t have to be work related)?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is always nice to receive positive feedback from students and colleagues, it’s extremely rewarding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I received a ‘Discovering Excellence’ award in 2019, which made me so happy.

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you had to describe yourself in one word what word would you choose?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Driven.
