{"id":186,"date":"2020-10-05T08:35:46","date_gmt":"2020-10-05T08:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/?p=186"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:37:42","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T13:37:42","slug":"celebrating-black-history-month-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2020\/10\/05\/celebrating-black-history-month-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Black History Month 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>This October is Black History Month, and in recognition of this, a number of activities have been planned throughout the University and School, writes Emily Baldwin.<\/em><\/strong><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These events celebrate both the achievements of Black people through history, as well as acknowledging the difficulties and racism that is prevalent in this history, and today.\u00a0<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to continue this learning process and to stimulate discussion, the Postgraduate Representatives, Rosanna Tilbrook, Donald Bowden and Emma Thomas, have organised a range of events to help the Postgraduate Students to engage with the subject matter. Following on from the <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2020\/07\/08\/shutdown-stem-and-academia\/\">\u2018Shutdown STEM\u2019 day of action in June<\/a>, there have already been several regular EDI events, where Postgraduate researchers have watched a documentary relating to Black Lives Matter and Black History before engaging in a group discussion on anti-racism. These have led to productive conversations and continued the discourse on these important matters.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of the events planned for this month follow the same structure, with viewings of the documentaries \u2018Black Power: America\u2019s Armed Resistance\u2019 and \u2018Black and British: A Forgotten History (episode 1)\u2019. As well as these documentaries two films are being shown: \u2018Hidden Figures\u2019 and \u2018Just Mercy\u2019. Both of these films celebrate the achievements of Black figures in history, from excelling in NASA to the founding of the Equal Justice Initiative.\u00a0<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Reps will also <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2020\/10\/01\/launching-black-history-month-newsletters\/\">compile newsletters<\/a> throughout the month which highlight the achievements of Black scientists as well as signposting resources for further learning. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This October is Black History Month, and in recognition of this, a number of activities have been planned throughout the University and School, writes Emily Baldwin.
