{"id":1353,"date":"2022-01-14T20:24:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-14T20:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/?p=1353"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:37:27","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T13:37:27","slug":"royal-astronomical-society-fowler-award-for-beatriz-sanchez-cano","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/2022\/01\/14\/royal-astronomical-society-fowler-award-for-beatriz-sanchez-cano\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal Astronomical Society Fowler Award for Beatriz Sanchez-Cano"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>A researcher from the University of Leicester has been recognised by the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) for her \u2018significant contribution\u2019 to scientists\u2019 understanding of the Martian atmosphere.<\/em><\/strong><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2022\/05\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1354\" width=\"588\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2022\/05\/image-3.png 762w, https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/physicsastronomy\/files\/2022\/05\/image-3-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Beatriz S\u00e1nchez-Cano, STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellow within the School of Physics and Astronomy, has been awarded the 2022 RAS Fowler (G) Award for her research of Mars\u2019 ionosphere.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through analysis of data from a range of instruments and missions, and through development of a widely-used numerical model, Dr S\u00e1nchez-Cano\u2019s work has identified important solar cycle and seasonal variations, as well as the ionospheric response to extreme space weather, such as the so-called solar wind and other high energy particle events.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is also guest investigator for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/le.ac.uk\/bepicolombo\">BepiColombo<\/a>\u00a0mission, on which the University of Leicester contributes the Mercury Imaging X-ray Spectrometer (MIXS), in addition to her involvement with various current and future Mars missions, including leadership of a European Space Agency (ESA) Voyage 2050 white paper on Mars\u2019 plasma environment.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Society\u2019s commendation also paid tribute to Dr S\u00e1nchez-Cano as an \u2018active and enthusiastic communicator of science to a wide variety of audiences\u2019.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr S\u00e1nchez-Cano said: \u201cI feel very honoured to receive this award from the Royal Astronomical Society in recognition of my contribution to planetary science.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI do not have enough words to express my gratitude to the Society, to the colleagues who thought about my work and nominated me, to the UK Magnetosphere, Ionosphere and Solar-Terrestrial (<a href=\"https:\/\/mist.ac.uk\/\">MIST<\/a>) community, and to the amazing colleagues and collaborators that have always guided me throughout my career and helped to \u2018spread my wings\u2019, especially here at the University of Leicester.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really hope my work and this award can help and encourage early-careers pursuing their path in research.\u201d<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Emma Bunce is President of the Royal Astronomical Society and also head of the University\u2019s School of Physics and Astronomy. My congratulations to all the winners of our 2022 awards!\u201d<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RAS Fowler Award for early achievement in geophysics was established in 2004 through the generosity of Mrs Rosemary Fowler.
