{"id":81,"date":"2015-04-16T13:26:31","date_gmt":"2015-04-16T13:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/pgrcareers\/?p=81"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:25:56","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T13:25:56","slug":"an-academic-career-the-ambition-of-every-postgraduate-researcher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/pgrcareers\/2015\/04\/16\/an-academic-career-the-ambition-of-every-postgraduate-researcher\/","title":{"rendered":"An Academic Career &#8211; the ambition of every postgraduate researcher?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So you are doing a PhD?\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 In career management terms we find that PhD researchers can be categorosed in one of four ways, in terms of their reasons for doing a PhD.\u00a0 These are: 1. doing it as a natural progression from their previous studies, with a view to starting a professional career; 2. as an enhancement to an existing career, e.g. a further qualification pursued with the intention of gaining career enhancement; 3. as part of a career change journey; 4. passion for the topic.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally a PhD was seen as a qualification required to develop an academic career, and indeed people who fall into any of the above four categories may well aspire to, or be developing, an academic career.\u00a0 The academic sector is highly competitive and constantly changing.<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, we are putting on an <a title=\"Academic Careers Evening Careers Event\" href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/offices\/lli\/events\/courses\/researcher-development\/academic-careers-ece\/academic-careers-ece\" target=\"_blank\">Academic Evening Careers Event<\/a> on May 14th here at the University.\u00a0 At this event we will hear from three academics who have achieved success in the contemporary academic environment.\u00a0 Experience from previous Evening Career Events indicates that our speakers frank observations provide insights that are nt replicable on a website or brochure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So you are doing a PhD?\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 In career management terms we find that PhD researchers can be categorosed in one of four ways, in terms of their reasons for doing a PhD.\u00a0 These are: 1. doing it as a natural progression from their previous studies, with a view to starting a professional career; 2.
