{"id":107,"date":"2012-12-06T12:25:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-06T12:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/2012\/12\/06\/thursday-6th-december-sol-119\/"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:28:39","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T13:28:39","slug":"thursday-6th-december-sol-119","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/2012\/12\/06\/thursday-6th-december-sol-119\/","title":{"rendered":"Thursday 6th December Sol 119"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA HQ have announced that the mission lifetime of MSL has been extended indefinitely, beyond the current one martian year (2 terrestrial years).&nbsp; That\u2019s good news for the sceince team, though not unexpected bearing in mind how well Curiosity is operating. &nbsp;&nbsp;As the plutonium power source has a half life of tens of years, hopefully we will be making discoveries for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;There is also a plan for a new Curiosity class rover for 2020 which could explore one of the other landing sites in the MSL short list including the Eberswalde delta or Marwth Vallis .&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We don\u2019t know what instruments Curiosity\u2019s sibling will have yet but there has long been an aspiration for sample return from Mars.&nbsp; A first step in that multi mission process would be to cache samples for subsequent return, so that technology would interest many scientists.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>The Insight static lander of 2016 will produce a seismic profile of the martian crust and mantle and the ExoMars rover due for landing in 2018 will be a European led rover designed specifically to test for signs of past or present life.&nbsp; Mission planning for that will be informed by the results from Curiosity.&nbsp; The MAVEN orbiter for 2013 will determine the rates of atmospheric loss from Mars and the ExoMars Orbiter of 2016 will provide stereo, colour coverage of Mars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some of the technology and instruments for these missions will&nbsp; come from the UK.&nbsp; For instance CCD detectors on CHEMIN&nbsp;&nbsp;and CHEMCAM are&nbsp;made by E2V, a UK company and the seismometer on Insight will have a UK lead.&nbsp; The University&nbsp;of Leicester has a major role &nbsp;in a Raman spectrometer for ExoMars and leads other possible instrumemts for landers including X-ray diffraction and the Life Marker Chip.<\/p>\n<p>We are in a golden era of martian exploration. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NASA HQ have announced that the mission lifetime of MSL has been extended indefinitely, beyond the current one martian year (2 terrestrial years).&nbsp; That\u2019s good news for the sceince team, though not unexpected bearing in mind how well Curiosity is operating. &nbsp;&nbsp;As the plutonium power source has a half life of tens of years, hopefully [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":273,"featured_media":352,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-107","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/107","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/273"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=107"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/107\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":715,"href":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/107\/revisions\/715"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/352"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=107"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=107"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/mars\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=107"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
