In the 1970s and 1980s Ghirri gave a key contribution to photography and a new aesthetic identity to everyday places, positing them at the core of the artistic practice and critical debate in Italy. Despite a growing attention in recent times, his work (already widely acknowledged in Italy) remains relatively little known in Anglophone contexts. By analyzing Ghirri\u2019s individual and collaborative projects, the conference aims to explore their many facets and their cross-fertilization with the recent \u2018spatial turn\u2019 in contemporary arts. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">2. <b>To<\/b> <b>examine the intersections of photography, literature and space\/place\/landscape studies in Italy and elsewhere (especially in Europe and the US)<\/b>. In the 1970s and 1980s many photographers \u2013 such as Gabriele Basilico, Guido Guidi, Vittore Fossati and others \u2013 began to focus on urban, rural and marginal\/interstitial places as a means of reflecting upon their artistic practice and their experience of the exterior; this in turn gave rise to the so-called \u2018Italian school of landscape photography\u2019. At the same time, many contemporary writers in Italy and elsewhere \u2013 among them Gianni Celati, Giorgio Messori, W.G. Sebald, John Berger \u2013 engaged in a dialogue with photography, by collaborating with photographers\/visual artists on photo-texts or by using photography as a metaphor to address issues related to seeing and perceiving, travel and displacement, community and social\/political commitment. A parallel convergence of disciplinary interests, in Italy and abroad, has led to an explosion of critical discourse and cultural initiatives around space\/place\/landscape (e.g. the creation of landscape museums and literary parks) and to the theorization of new forms of landscapes, such as \u2018hybrid landscapes\u2019 or \u2018iperpaesaggi\u2019 (hyper-landscapes). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">We welcome contributions that: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">examine any underexplored facet of Ghirri\u2019s photography, writing and curatorial work, e.g.: research the cultural context in which his work is positioned; set his art in dialogue with some of his contemporaries; study his sources of inspiration (whether visual, literary, musical or others); evaluate his legacy in contemporary photography and in other areas of artistic and literary practice (literature, visual arts, cinema); assess his contribution, alongside other contemporary artists, to the recent theoretical debate on space, landscape and the everyday in different disciplines (e.g. architecture, environmental studies, aesthetics, policy-making); <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">analyze how contemporary writers, photographers or theorists from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds have experienced, narrated, imagined the exterior, redefining urban, rural and marginal places\/landscapes. Comparative analyses of the work of more than one artist\/writer are also encouraged;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">consider relations of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\">intellectual genealogy and cultural legacy among different writers, artists and theorists in Italy and beyond with respect to issues of space and landscape; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">research key aspects of \u2018landscape photography\u2019 and\/or \u2018documentary photography\u2019, such as their forms, uses and reception in Italy and outside, including their relation to literature and to the practice and theory of photography;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">examine different modes of (literary) writing in relation to space\/place\/landscape \u2013 as evidenced in the recent boom of travel writing and narrative reportage \u2013 their critical reception and theorization, and their relation to society and politics in a broader sense;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">discuss the ways in which literary\/artistic representations of place\/landscape and cultural\/heritage practices (i.e. landscape museums or literary parks) have contributed to building particular types of community identities and relations;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">interrogate recent modes of intermedial, intersemiotic and interdisciplinary dialogue between literature and photography (e.g. works composed of written and visual texts) <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\">and their intersections with space\/place\/landscape studies;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">question the singularity, visibility and translatability of the Italian case with reference to artistic\/literary practices and theoretical debates on space\/place\/landscape;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">present detailed analyses of single case studies on a specific photographic or literary text <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\">(if preferred, contributions of this kind can last just 10 minutes);<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">consider the extent to which artistic and literary practice and debates on space-related topics have contributed to a new understanding of place and landscape and to the development of cultural policies and legislation on landscape over the past decades, or, vice-versa, how new legislation on landscape has informed artistic\/literary representations of places.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">We welcome proposals from both individuals and panel\/round table organisers on any of the above topics. The contributions may adopt a range of methodological and (inter-)disciplinary perspectives. Nonostante la crescente attenzione anche all\u2019estero per l\u2019opera di Ghirri (gi\u00e0 ampiamente studiata in Italia), essa rimane poco conosciuta nel contesto anglofono. Nell\u2019esaminare i progetti individuali e collaborativi di Ghirri, il convegno si propone di esplorarli nei loro molteplici aspetti e nei rapporti con il recente \u2018spatial turn\u2019 nelle arti contemporanee.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">2. <b>Esaminare le intersezioni tra fotografia, letteratura e teoria dello spazio, luogo e paesaggio in Italia e altrove (in particolare in Europa e negli Stati Uniti)<\/b>. Negli anni \u201870 e \u201880 molti fotografi, quali Gabriele Basilico, Guido Guidi, Vittore Fossati ed altri, hanno rivolto la loro attenzione a spazi urbani, rurali e periferici o intestiziali al fine di riflettere sulla propria pratica artistica ed esperienza dell\u2019esterno; ci\u00f2 ha dato vita alla cosiddetta \u2018scuola italiana di paesaggio\u2019 in fotografia. Allo stesso tempo vari scrittori contemporanei, italiani e non solo \u2013 tra cui Gianni Celati, Giorgio Messori, W.G. Sebald, John Berger \u2013 hanno stabilito un dialogo con la fotografia, sia collaborando con fotografi\/artisti alla produzione di fotolibri, sia adottando la fotografia come metafora per affrontare temi quali la visione e percezione dell\u2019esterno, il viaggio e lo spaesamento, il senso di comunit\u00e0 e l\u2019impegno socio-politico. Parallelamente, in Italia come all\u2019estero, una convergenza di interessi disciplinari su spazio\/luogo\/paesaggio ha portato a un\u2019esplosione del dibattito critico e di iniziative culturali su questi temi (per esempio musei del paesaggio e parchi letterari) e a teorizzare nuove forme di paesaggio quali \u2018paesaggi ibridi\u2019 o \u2018iperpaesaggi\u2019, fenomeni che hanno messo in discussione una nozione univoca di paesaggio e spazio urbano.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Si accettano contributi che si propongano di: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">esaminare aspetti finora inesplorati del lavoro fotografico, critico, curatoriale di Ghirri, ad esempio: studiare il contesto culturale in cui ha operato; porre la sua opera in dialogo con quella dei suoi contemporanei; analizzare le sue fonti di ispirazione (visive, letterarie, musicali o altre); valutare il lascito culturale e l\u2019impatto della sua opera nei confronti della pratica e della teoria fotografica e di altre arti contemporanee (letteratura, cinema, arti visive), in Italia e in altri paesi; considerare il suo contributo, a fianco di altri artisti, al recente dibattito critico\/teorico sullo spazio, sul paesaggio e sul quotidiano in varie discipline (architettura, studi ambientali, estetica, politiche culturali, ecc.) <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">riflettere su come scrittori, fotografi e teorici provenienti da discipline e culture diverse abbiano esperito, narrato, immaginato l\u2019esterno, ed abbiano ridefinito gli spazi urbani, rurali, \u2018marginali\u2019 o interstiziali. Si incoraggiano anche indagini comparative;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">esaminare il lascito culturale e le genealogie <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\">intellettuali tra diversi scrittori, fotografi, artisti e teorici in Italia e all\u2019estero sui temi relativi a spazio e paesaggio; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">considerare questioni concernenti la \u2018fotografia di paesaggio\u2019 e la \u2018fotografia documentaria\u2019, in particolare le loro forme, usi e ricezione in Italia e all\u2019estero, il loro ruolo nei confronti della pratica e della teoria fotografica e il loro rapporto con la letteratura;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">analizzare aspetti connessi alla scrittura (letteraria) in rapporto a spazio, luogo e paesaggio \u2013 a partire dalla recente esplosione della scrittura di viaggio e del reportage narrativo \u2013 la loro ricezione critica e teorica e i loro aspetti sociali e politici nel senso lato dei termini;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">discutere i modi in cui sia la rappresentazione letteraria e artistica di luoghi e paesaggi che le recenti pratiche culturali connesse al paesaggio (musei del paesaggio e parchi letterari) hanno contribuito a creare tipi particolari di comunit\u00e0, identit\u00e0 e relazioni;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">interrogare recenti modalit\u00e0 di dialogo intermediale, intersemiotico o interdisciplinare tra letteratura e fotografia (ad esempio esaminando testi composti di elementi verbali e visivi)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> e il loro rapporto con la teoria dello spazio e del paesaggio;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">riflettere sulla singolarit\u00e0, visibilit\u00e0 e traducibilit\u00e0 del paradigma italiano in altre culture rispetto alla pratica letteraria ed artistica e ai dibattiti teorici su spazio e paesaggio;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">presentare l\u2019analisi dettagliata di un testo letterario o fotografico (contributi di questo tipo possono durare anche solo 10 minuti);<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u00a7<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: medium\">considerare in che misura i dibattiti artistici e letterari su temi connessi allo spazio abbiano contribuito allo sviluppo di politiche culturali e alla legislazione sul paesaggio negli ultimi decenni, o viceversa in che modo le nuove politiche paesaggistiche possano aver influito sulla rappresentazione artistica e letteraria dei luoghi.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Si accettano proposte da parte di individui o coordinatori di sessioni o tavole rotonde; le relazioni non devono superare i 20 minuti e le sessioni (di tre interventi) i 90 minuti. I contributi possono adottare diversi approcci metodologici e (inter-)disciplinari.
