Participate in our study to find out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/10\/Blue-question.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-382\" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/10\/Blue-question.png\" alt=\"Blue question\" width=\"99\" height=\"118\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>What do your students think about &#8216;learning outcomes&#8217;?\u00a0 Do they use them?\u00a0 What do they use them for?\u00a0 Are they helpful for their learning?\u00a0 How could they be made more helpful?\u00a0 What, if any,\u00a0specific aspects of their studying do &#8216;learning outcomes&#8217; support?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These are some of the questions that the &#8216;Learning Outcomes Project&#8217; team at the University of Leicester\u00a0would like to help\u00a0you and your institution answer.\u00a0\u00a0We are currently seeking expressions of interest from institutions to participate in a national-level study\u00a0and I am shamelessly using\u00a0our blog space here to promote\u00a0the call.\u00a0 I have a formal invitation document that contains all the details about our study that I will gladly forward on to interested parties, but let&#8217;s\u00a0see if I can whet the appetite with a short and\u00a0sweet look at the key details about our planned research:<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-375\" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\" alt=\"Man question\" width=\"56\" height=\"53\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>What is the aim of the study?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>The study aims to explore the use of learning outcomes by students and academic staff at various institutions across the UK.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #993300\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-375 \" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"33\" height=\"31\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000\"> What does the study involve?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>The study\u00a0will involve undergraduate students and academic staff at participating institutions who will be invited to complete a survey and take part in focus groups that investigate both groups\u2019 perceptions of learning outcomes and how these outcomes may be utilised within their learning and teaching activities.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #993300\"><a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-375 \" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"36\" height=\"34\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #008000\">What will the findings be used for?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>To advance understandings within the academic community about the use of a learning outcomes approach within higher education, which\u00a0is currently insufficiently underpinned by research evidence;<\/li>\n<li>To inform participating institutions about particular features of the learning and teaching activities of its students and staff;<\/li>\n<li>To develop online guidance materials for each participating institution to support and enhance how students and staff work with learning outcomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #993300\"><a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-375\" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\" alt=\"Man question\" width=\"37\" height=\"35\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #008000\">What will my institution have to do?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>The project team at the University of Leicester will facilitate most of the activities that will occur in participating institutions. The University of Leicester project team will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare all research instruments, in consultation;<\/li>\n<li>Support institutions (with relevant information, document templates, etc) in securing institutional ethical approval for the project;<\/li>\n<li>Facilitate dissemination of the survey via online and in-person methods;<\/li>\n<li>Conduct focus groups within each institution;<\/li>\n<li>Input, transcribe and analyse data gathered;<\/li>\n<li>Write a report of findings for each partner institution;<\/li>\n<li>Develop online guidance materials in collaboration with each institution;<\/li>\n<li>Support the roll-out and evaluation of resources within each institution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Participating partner institutions will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Designate a project lead person within their institution who will be the main contact and liaison person for the University of Leicester project team;<\/li>\n<li>Provide practical and logistical support, such as assisting with survey distribution and booking rooms for focus groups for the University of Leicester project team to carry out required research activities;<\/li>\n<li>Complete necessary institutional administrative procedures, such as gaining ethical approval for the project (these activities will be supported by the University of Leicester project team);<\/li>\n<li>Champion the project across the institution;<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to project outputs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Input from partner institutions to help shape and direct the activities being conducted with their students and academic staff will be welcomed and encouraged at all stages of the research process.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #993300\"><a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-375\" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\" alt=\"Man question\" width=\"35\" height=\"33\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #008000\">When will the study take place?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>We aim to begin the study in July 2015.\u00a0 The research with students and academic staff will occur in the 2015\/16 academic year.\u00a0 The development and evaluation of the online guidance materials will take place in the 2016\/17 academic year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #993300\"><a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-375\" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/09\/Man-question.gif\" alt=\"Man question\" width=\"35\" height=\"33\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #008000\">What are the benefits of participating?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>Participating institutions will have the opportunity to benefit in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gaining greater insight into facets of the learning and teaching activities of students and academic staff within the institution;<\/li>\n<li>Having own institutional data-set gathered by the University of Leicester project team to use for further research\/development work;<\/li>\n<li>Developing, in collaboration with the University of Leicester project team, a set of guidance materials for students and academic staff;<\/li>\n<li>Networking with other project partner institutions at project feedback events;<\/li>\n<li>Collaborating on and co-owning potential project outputs, including peer-reviewed publications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is a really exciting opportunity to be involved in an, as yet, very under-researched area.\u00a0 My previous blogs posts show that\u00a0the &#8216;Learning Outcomes Project&#8217; team has made a start on\u00a0filling the research\u00a0gap by\u00a0investigating this topic within our own institution (e.g. <a title=\"Learning about learning outcomes: the student perspective\" href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/2014\/04\/04\/paper\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Learning about learning outcomes: the student perspective<\/em> <\/a>and <a title=\"Countering arguments against learning outcomes with scrutiny and evidence\" href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/2014\/06\/24\/counter\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Countering arguments against learning outcomes with scrutiny and evidence<\/em><\/a>).\u00a0 We need now to collect\u00a0evidence on a much broader and wider scale\u00a0to begin addressing questions about the actual impact of a learning outcomes\u00a0approach on students and academic staff\u00a0within higher education.<\/p>\n<p>And so finally my plea &#8211;
