{"id":23,"date":"2014-02-20T16:07:28","date_gmt":"2014-02-20T16:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/?p=23"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:24:00","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T13:24:00","slug":"lopurposes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/2014\/02\/20\/lopurposes\/","title":{"rendered":"Can learning outcomes support the broader purposes of higher education?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/02\/Question-mark.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25 aligncenter\" style=\"width: 134px;height: 184px\" alt=\"Question mark\" src=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/files\/2014\/02\/Question-mark-214x300.jpg\" width=\"145\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">I was asked the question the other day:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u2018Do you think it would be possible for a Medical course to have just one learning outcome?\u2019\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Interesting. What would this learning outcome be? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u2018By the end of this course you (the student) will be a caring, compassionate, competent and safe doctor\u2019.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">This question came from a colleague who has several times expressed his feeling that students are focused more in units and modules on what they need to know to pass the exam rather than on what they need to know to become a \u2018<i>caring, compassionate, competent and safe doctor\u2019<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Medical course is one that uses learning outcomes extensively (students are given course, unit and session learning outcomes) and it may be wishful thinking to think it can do away with all but one overarching outcome.\u00a0 It does make one wonder though.\u00a0 Are these broader, overarching goals being obscured by the more specific and tightly-focused modular or session learning outcomes?\u00a0 Are we still communicating to students, or encouraging them to think about, the broader (individual, societal, cultural, professional, etc, etc) purposes, and hence outcomes, of undertaking a particular degree or higher education experience?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">I was very taken with Sir David Watson\u2019s view that<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/higher-education-network\/blog\/2013\/dec\/13\/higher-education-impact-on-students\" target=\"_blank\"> \u2018higher education&#8217;s purposes come together in terms of self-creation and the authentic life, the habit of thinking deeply, and the capacity to connect with others empathically\u2019<\/a><\/em> .\u00a0 This of course connects to mcguire\u2019s post that I commented on in my <a title=\"Learning outcomes in higher education: what\u2019s being blogged?\" href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/loproject\/2014\/02\/18\/loblogs\/\" target=\"_blank\">last post <\/a>, and it probably cuts to the heart of the debates and arguments on this topic \u2013 that these broader, fuzzier, subjective and personal goals or purposes of higher education do not (and cannot?) fit into a narrative of student experience that is focused largely on achieving pre-determined, observable and measurable learning outcomes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">But does a learning outcomes approach have to mean that these broader purposes and more subjective aspects of learning become obscured behind achieving assessment-focused outcomes?\u00a0 Or can we find some common ground where learning outcomes can be used in ways that support and keep attention focused on broader purposes?\u00a0 I\u2019d like to think that we can.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was asked the question the other day: \u00a0\u2018Do you think it would be possible for a Medical course to have just one learning outcome?\u2019\u00a0 \u00a0Interesting.
