{"id":961,"date":"2023-02-22T16:13:55","date_gmt":"2023-02-22T16:13:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/business\/?p=961"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:21:08","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T13:21:08","slug":"equality-diversity-and-inclusion-representations-in-marketing-require-more-attention-to-context","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/business\/2023\/02\/22\/equality-diversity-and-inclusion-representations-in-marketing-require-more-attention-to-context\/","title":{"rendered":"Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Representations in Marketing Require more Attention to Context."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Writes ULSB&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/le.ac.uk\/people\/cristina-galalae\">Dr. Cristina Galalae<\/a>, Lecturer in Marketing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Brands can play an important role in fostering inclusion in our increasingly diverse societies. <a href=\"https:\/\/business.adobe.com\/blog\/the-latest\/despite-25-years-of-advertising-growth-diversity-remains-a-challenge#gs.014hbl\">38% of the respondents to a recent survey conducted by Adobe,<\/a> said that they are more likely to purchase products and services from brands that show diversity in their advertisements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journals.uchicago.edu\/doi\/10.1086\/722704\">new research<\/a> with colleagues in the <a href=\"https:\/\/multicultural-marketplaces.net\/\">Multicultural Marketplaces network<\/a> shows that marketing practitioners who aim to promote inclusion and to curtail discrimination through branding and communication need to pay more attention to contextual specificities. For example, featuring various forms of cultural diversity in advertisements in the UK may contribute to a more inclusive society. But representing some forms of diversity in countries where the majority of the population opposes this, may translate into violence against the groups that we are trying to represent and include in the first place. Our work problematizes such complex scenarios noting that representations of cultural diversity do not always transfer across countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Results from our extensive review of marketing research and practice illustrate that various micro-social expressions of contexts \u2013 such as one\u2019s specific racial background, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, etc. &#8211; intersect differently across macro-social expressions of contexts \u2013 such as geographical, ideological, historical, and economic settings. This requires caution when it comes to representing different forms of cultural diversity across geographical spaces. It is therefore vital to understand contextual specificities when representing people with different cultural backgrounds in multicultural societies, where people, brands, ideologies, and meanings with different cultural associations co-exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To help with this, we have developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journals.uchicago.edu\/doi\/10.1086\/722704\">guiding framework<\/a> that marketing practitioners can use to equitably address all consumers in multicultural marketplaces without exclusion, restriction, or mistreatment.
