{"id":259,"date":"2014-12-10T10:54:34","date_gmt":"2014-12-10T10:54:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/management\/?p=259"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:21:11","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T13:21:11","slug":"critical-management-studies-is-coming-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/business\/2014\/12\/10\/critical-management-studies-is-coming-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Critical Management Studies is Coming Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Deputy Head of School <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/departments\/management\/people\/jbrewis\"><em>Professor Jo Brewis<\/em><\/a><em> briefly outlines details of the thematic streams awaiting delegates of next summer\u2019s <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\"><em>9<sup>th<\/sup> Critical Management Studies (CMS)<\/em><\/a><em> Conference<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Martin Parker has already <a href=\"https:\/\/staffblogs.le.ac.uk\/management\/2014\/06\/25\/critical-management-studies-at-leicester\/\">explained<\/a> <em>why<\/em> Leicester\u2019s management academics have regularly had the cheek to criticize the pervasiveness of managerialism. Managerialism, he argued, should not be seen as the natural panacea for all our global ills: alternatives to the ubiquity of neoliberal market managerialism exist. It has been left to me to announce <em>how<\/em> such an exploration of alternatives will be realised at next year\u2019s Critical Management Studies (CMS) conference.<\/p>\n<p>Our organising committee is now delighted to be able to confirm the contributions of three notable key note speakers: environmental and anti-globalization author and activist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vandana_Shiva\">Vandana Shiva<\/a>, employee ownership expert <a href=\"http:\/\/daviderdal.net\/david-erdal\/\">David Erdal<\/a> and psychologist, writer, producer and social commentator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.selfishcapitalist.com\/\">Oliver James<\/a>. We also have the privilege of announcing <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\">28 separate streams<\/a>. Mindful of the presumptuousness of speaking on behalf of others, I\u2019d encourage you to read up on each of these individually for the sake of seeing what their organizers actually have to say for themselves. Nevertheless, for the purposes of brevity, I\u2019ve bundled the streams together below with respect to their thematic similarity. So with apologies to all of our stream convenors&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Five of the streams adopt <em>very far reaching perspectives in their search for alternatives<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/ruins\">Stream 3<\/a> sees \u201ccatastrophic conditions as the products of human action and thus subject to change\u201d while <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/dissensus\">stream 6<\/a> on democracy, subversion and dissensus concentrates not on the question of whether alternative realities are possible but on the practices of their realization. <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/22-201cescaping-capitalism2019s-contradictions-resistance-transition-and-transformation201d\">Stream 22<\/a>, on escaping capitalism, constructs trajectories out of contemporary socio-economic arrangements while <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/critique\">stream 23<\/a> challenges \u201ca particular version\u201d of history which plays down \u201cthe many alternatives \u2026 to the apparent ubiquity of neoliberalism and managerialism\u201d. <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/28-towards-a-critical-political-economy-of-organisation\">Stream 28<\/a> on political economy considers \u201cthe organization of total social capital\u201d in order to reposition management and organization studies within its wider socio-economic capitalist context. In all five of these cases, though not just here, delegates are being asked to understand managerialism as something embedded within larger and more significant circuits.<\/p>\n<p>Another five of the streams then seek to demarcate <em>a specific aspect of management within which the notion of heterodoxy warrants further pursuit<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/finance\">Stream 4<\/a>, on finance and its alternatives; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/food\">stream 7<\/a>, on alternative food and drink markets; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/health\">stream 11<\/a>, on health and social management; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/21-questioning-the-2018fixing2019-of-management-education-opening-up-the-alternatives\">stream 21<\/a>, on management education; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/ecological\">stream 26<\/a>, on ecological accountancy and accounting; each require their participants to consider how their particular objects have been presented, thus delimiting alternatives. Contributors towards each of these streams will therefore be expected to shake a specific area of management out of its dogmatic slumber.<\/p>\n<p>Yet another five streams will take their bearings from <em>specific forms of organizing<\/em>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/degradation\">stream 9<\/a>, on the degradation of the employment relationship; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/17-fourth-wave-feminism-bodies-practices-politics-and-ethics\">stream 17<\/a>, on fourth wave feminism; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/19-exploring-civil-society-voluntary-and-not-for-profit-organisations-as-a-crucible-for-creative-alternative-democratic-imaginaries\">stream 19<\/a>, on civil society, voluntary and not-for-profit organizations; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/enterprises\">stream 24<\/a>, on cooperative and community-owned organizations; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/road\">stream 25<\/a> on employee share ownership in Central and Eastern Europe. Here, the emphasis is clearly on describing organisation as a phenomenon underpinned by profoundly theoretical and demonstrably practical dimensions.<\/p>\n<p>The search for alternatives regularly evokes spatial imagery which is why we have four streams organised around <em>the themes of space and place<\/em> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/space\">stream 5<\/a>, on culture and regional governance; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/transformations\">stream 8<\/a> on international development; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/16-organising-and-migration-s-moving-borders-enacting-transformative-spatialities-creating-mobile-commons\">stream 16<\/a>, on migration, borders and mobility; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/18-critical-perspectives-on-place-marketing-and-branding-beyond-elitism-2013-where-to\">stream 18<\/a>, on place marketing and branding.<\/p>\n<p>Four streams will also be devoted to the task of scrutinizing <em>the constitution, activities and effects of economically, socially and ideologically powerful groups<\/em>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/elites\">stream 10<\/a>, on global elites; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/neoliberalism\">stream 12<\/a>, on the professions; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/20-critical-entrepreneurship-studies\">stream 20<\/a>, on entrepreneurs; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/27-managerial-agency-and-the-maintenance-of-inequalities\">stream 28<\/a>, on managers.<\/p>\n<p>There will be two streams organized around a concern with <em>the ethics of scholarly interaction<\/em>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/articulating\">stream 2<\/a>, a pre-conference PhD workshop focused on writing about alternatives and <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/14-an-experiment-in-critical-friendship-3\">stream 14<\/a>, a women-only stream organized by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vidascholars.org\/\">VIDA<\/a>, following its principles of critical friendship. Two streams invite participants to <em>engage with the arts<\/em>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/13-organization-collaborative-practices-in-the-arts\">stream 13<\/a>, on the organization of artistic production; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/15-taking-management-research-beyond-critique-an-experiential-drama-workshop-on-cultural-animation\">stream 15<\/a>, on cultural animation, on the other hand, <em>both <\/em>making broadly empirical enquiries in the first instance and broadly methodological and pedagogical enquiries in the second. In addition to all of this, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/conference\/cms15\/sub-streams\/1-open-stream\">open stream<\/a> is being run for \u201cauthors whose work does not really fit within any of the other streams but their papers broadly fit with the conference theme\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Like I said, you really need to read through each of the streams to get a real sense for the variety of discussions we\u2019re very much looking forward to hosting next July.
