Although Dr. Shuihua (Sharon) Wang remains on the Arch-I-Scan project team as a research associate, we now have a new official Mathematics Postdoctoral Research Associate. The Arch-I-Scan project warmly welcomes Zedong Zheng to the team as our Maths Postdoc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zedong is coming to us from De Montfort University, just across the city. While he begins his postdoctoral research position with Arch-I-Scan, he is also in the final stages (writing up status) of his PhD in De Montfort\u2019s School of Computer Science and Informatics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before he came to Leicester, Zedong was a senior IT engineer in China where he built up ten years of experience in the design and development of intelligent systems for his local government department. In this work, he completed an incredibly impressive 16 government-funded projects which were worth about 4 million pounds! Within this period, he also worked in the development of imaging analysis, object detection and machine learning architectures \u2013 all skills which he will be using in his new role with the Arch-I-Scan project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zedong will be taking on a leading role in developing our AI system for automatically identifying and recording Roman pottery vessels and sherds. He will be applying state-of-the-art machine learning, convolutional neural networks, and data analytics techniques, in in line with the research goals of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

And he says he\u2019s looking forward to solving the real-life problem. He reveals, \u2018to be honest, archaeology is one of the most attractive subjects to me, but I have never had a chance to get involved. It is a very complex and delicate professional discipline that requires a good understanding of history, culture and other expert knowledge. I do think I need some time to gain some relevant expertise, but I am looking forward to the outputs of this project. I expect this project to bring incredible convenience and efficiency to the task of identifying and sorting Roman vessels.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he\u2019s not busy being a tech whiz, Zedong says he always enjoys spending time in the company of his family. He also says that, considering that he stares at the computer screen for long stretches of time for his work, he also really enjoys sports in which he can be more active, such as Tabata training, badminton and skiing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we say again, Welcome, Zedong! We\u2019re looking very forward to spending more time together as we work towards new and exciting project outputs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
